Fresh from Paris: color as couture at Peet Dullaert

Episode two from Paris, and this one is extra close to home: the couture show by Peet Dullaert, last July during Couture Week. Peet drapes like no other; fabrics that move around the body as if they always belonged there. And backstage, I had the privilege of leading the hair team, together with Goldwell, our partner brand from day one.

Hair as couture material

For this show, we treated hair the way Peet treats his fabric: as a material to build with. We worked with hand-painted prints in Goldwell color: leopard spots, brushstrokes, and graphic planes, hand-painted on mirror-smooth hair and on wefts. Black spots on lilac-grey. A yellow print running through a black bob. Brown and pink as brushstrokes over silver-blonde. Not a standard color from a tube on a whole head, but color as a brushstroke. That's couture thinking applied to hair, and it might just be the most beautiful work you can do backstage.

Why this will be a trend

Watch out for color as an accessory. What we did at Dullaert will be seen everywhere in a wearable form next season: a painted strand, a print in an accent color, a weft that you put in and take out without commitment. It's part of the same movement as the hairpieces at RVDK: your hair is no longer just your hair, it's your statement. And you don't have to do anything permanent for it.
